From natural wonders to natural ciders, local wines, tiny villages, and haute couture, this fantastic day trip will open the gates to the Basque Country’s culinary culture and history.

ZUMAIA: HIKE THE CLIFFS and BEACH

Start the day with pick-up at your hotel and a dash to the town of Zumaia. Here, we will walk on the beach and the cliffs jutting out into the sea.

We’ll also take in the “flysch”, a dramatic geological phenomenon that has an otherworldly quality (indeed Game of Thrones was frequently shot here).

A quick stroll through the old town, a stop for coffee and a pintxo and we are ready to go.

OFF TO THE VINEYARDS

The Basque coast is home to the original appellation for Txakoli winemaking and houses the best and most traditional producers.

There are only 34 wineries in this DOP. We will visit a local winery in a gorgeous setting for a tasting of different Txakoli wines and sample some local snacks.

CIDER HOUSE LUNCH

Cider is the original drink of the Basque Country and the most local tipple. Hard cider is a completely natural ferment clocking in at around 5% alcohol and not particularly sweet. In fact, it is more like kombucha.

Lunch at a rustic cider house is an age-old tradition so it’s an absolute must on this Basque coastal tour!

Your lunch includes a hearty prix fixe menu of chorizo, cod omelet, fried fish, a bone-in “txuleta” ribeye steak, and Idiazabal sheep’s cheese for dessert.

Oh yeah, it also includes ALL YOU CAN DRINK CIDER, frequently tapped from the barrels!

GETARIA

Your Basque Country coastal guided tour finishes at the tiny and historically significant town of Getaria.

Two of the town’s native sons put it on the map: Juan Sebastián Elkano for being the first sailor to circumnavigate the globe in 1522 and Cristóbal Balenciaga for revolutionizing the fashion industry with his haute couture.

The active port of Getaria is also famous for its seafood and anchovy canneries.

We’ll walk the streets and take in the port before finishing the day at the beautiful Balenciaga Museum for an intimate look into the work of one of the 20th century’s most celebrated fashion designers.
