The Basque Country straddles the Spanish-French border, and French Basque Country is as unique and captivating as the region on the Spanish side.

With distinctive architecture, delicious cuisine, lush countryside, and a curious French beach culture, there’s really nothing quite like it. 

While the “North Country”, or Iparralde as it is known in the local tongue, is still very much a part of the Basque Country, there’s a sophisticated French flair to the area that makes it one of our favorite day trips.

Your French Basque Country tour starts with a morning departure from San Sebastián and a dash up the coast to Biarritz.

Here, we visit the charming market — a real feast for the senses. We can stop for croissants and café or go straight for the oysters, pintxos of local foie, and wine.

We then unwind by walking on the coast to see some of the city’s charming beaches and historic sites.

It’s then time to make the short drive down the coast to Saint Jean de Luz. 

This traditional fishing village is like a living garden full of adorable streets lined with flowering vines and old-world Basque architecture. 

We visit one of our favorite restaurants for an elegant French Basque lunch before taking in the town, its beaches, and the shopping district on foot. 

Saint Jean de Luz is the birthplace of the macaroon, famed for its unique cotton and linen textiles, and home to our favorite lighthouse in the world.
